LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging and uses sensor technology to create a map of the immediate vicinity of a vehicle in transit.

LiDAR sensors send out infrared light and measure the time it takes for that infrared light to bounce off an object, creating a 3D map. Essentially, LiDAR means the vehicle itself can see all around the outside of itself.
